Vladek is a man who cares for money more than anything, in the scene where he compares lucia and Anja he clearly stats his favoring to Anja because she is rich. which shows his interest in money

He is a very responsible person, in the scene where he finds out that he has no work he still sneaks into town with no papers and do unauthorization and he made money for the family. This clearly shows his responsibility in helping out.

Vladek is a very good helpful man, in the scene where in the P.O.W camp where an old man couldn't do anymore work. Vladek helped him so that the germans wont hurt the man. And that is a very nice thing to do

Vladek is very smart/ intelligent, in the scene where the germans catch him with unauthorized 10 kilos of sugar in the street he tricked them into believing that he had his legal buisness. that shows how clever and brave he is.

Vladek is a person who obviously has been through a lot in his life and it shows in the way that he does things. He keeps everything, Mala even says that he kept the plastic cup from when he was in the hospital. He seems to want to hold on to every little thing that is in his life.

scene 1 - he's self conscience about his love life but doesn't mind telling his son of his hardships during the war. He mentions his first girlfriend, Lucia, to Artie but tells him not to put it in his story because he feels it's too personal

scene 2 - He's a very conservative Jew and still believes in being formal at the dinner table. Like when Artie was full but Vladek forced him to eat everything off of his plate because it was rude to leave leftovers.

scene 3 - During the war, Vladek used all means to survive during the war. For example he would bathe in freezing river water to clean himself and so he would be warmer when he got out, did gymnastics and prayed.

scene 4 - Vladek is a hard working man. When he escaped the PoW camp he looked for all kinds of work so he could get money. He was a carpenter, he sold food, he worked in tile factories, among more.

vladek is very money hungry. he likes money and knows how to keep it and manage it.in fact it might be his only love. he chose his wives for money.as it said in one part that he married anja because she came from money and the other girl didnt.he doesnt like mala because all she talks about is money and thinks it grows on bushes.

he is very driven. he knows what he needs to survive and keep his family safe.when money couldnt be made..right after he came from the war he began going out and doing illegal work to help the family.and started saving.

he is very caring also.when his wife was sick and depressed, he left his work to go be with her and take good care of her. that is very sweet of him to do.

he is also very controlling. he tends to yell at his son and tell him what to do through out the story while he's talking to him.and in one part he threw out his sons coat because he didnt want him wearing it.his son is well over his 30's

Vladek is a man who really is stict about money. This is proven when his drain pipe is broken, and instead of hiring someone to fix it he wants to fix it himself even though he is an old man.

Vladek is a man who still wants to make decisions for his son. This is proven when his son comes to visit and he throws his son's jacket away. He did this because he didn't want his son to wear a shabby old coat and gave him a warmer newer coat.

Vladek is a brave man. This is proven when he has to walk down the ghetto when all the violence against Jews is going on and yet he is still able to handle it.

Vladek is a loving man. This is proven when he leaves a much more attractive woman for a woman he loves more.

In the scene where Vladek is telling Artie about when the Germans were rounding all the Jews up to go to Auschwitz. He talks about his son Richiev. He's determined to save his son. This shows that he's a caring father.
When Artie comes over for another session, his stepmother Mala tells him that his father read a comic he wrote about his mother. His father has a shrine dedicated to Artie's mother with probably one picture of Mala on it. This shows that he truly loved his first and he doesn't pretend he doesn't still think about her.
Artie wouldn't help his father fix the roof. Vladek didn't complain but he also didn't just get over it. He kept trying to make his son feel guilty. He's kinda bitter and sarcastic.
He's also very forgetful. He seems to keep drifting off the topic at hand when he tells Artie about his life. So he's confused and forgetful.
So to some it all up. Vladek Spiegelman is a caring, strong loving, upfront, sarcastic, bitter, confused, forgetful old man.

Vladek is a very organized person and like others to be organized, in a scene he peeked into Anja's closet to see how organized she is.

Vladek does not like to waste food, he wanted Artie to eat all the food on his plate.

Vladek is an adventurous person, he was not satisfied with just eating just a little piece of bread and a little bit of soup every day and he wanted a better life, so he volunteered to work.

Vladek is a very religious person, he believed his dream that he would really be free when Parshas Truma came.

"my eye started so bleeding, i had to run out to find a doctor in a different hospital. there ANOTHER specialist operated right away! otherwise i could have died. so now its a GLASS eye."

we mostly know Vladek as how he was as a young man. but i see him as a crazy old fart! however, he is displayed as a person with good intentions. for example, the most noble thing, i think from what i read in the book, was when he was drafted. he sent his wife and child to sosnowiec to be safe while he went to war.

Vladek is a very responisble person in my opinion because he shows that his family is in his best interest. When Vladek finds out that he has no work, he immediately puts himself in danger by going out to find a job and he succeeds.

Vladek also loves money. Anja was rich and he says that the reason he married her was because of her money.

I think that over all, Vladek is a smart man. He is very intelligent. When all the Jews were in the camps he was shown as the leader because everyone always followed him and he always ended up making the best decisions.

Vladek is a very controling person. He tries to control his son and make decisions for him through out the story when his son is old enough to make decisions for himself. He throws away his sons coat because he didnt want him wearing it any more and replaced it with a newer and more warmer one.

Vladek is a man who loves money. In one of the scenes where he compares anja to mala and he says that he married anja because she came from a family that had a lot of money and the other girl didnt.

Vladek is a very caring person. He shows this when his wife gets very sick after having their baby and he goes with her to the sanitarium so she can get better and he leaves his work and everything just so that his wife could be ok.

Vladek is brave and smart in the scene where he is caught wit 10kilos of sugar by the germans he makes them believe that he owns a bussiness and gets away with it.

1. Vladek is a man who respects the value of money. In the scene in which Vladek choses Anja over Lucia, he simply states that Lucia came from a family not wealthy enough to even pay for a dowery and Anja came from a very wealthy well-off family.

2. Vladek is adept at surviving financially. In the scene where he returns from POW camps to his family, he cleverly makes money even though he didn't have means to make money.

3. Vladek is a man who cares very much for his family. This is shown when he throws out his son's old coat to replace it with what he thinks is a warmer and better coat.

4. Vladek is a hard working man. Whether its working for survival (the P.O.W. camps) or working for his family's well being (after escaping the camps), he always does what he can.

Derrick Virassammy said...

Vladek likes money. That is the reason he choose too marry Anja. He works hard and this is shown when he talks about his time at the war and P.O.W. camps. He also cares about his family like when he gives Artie a new coat and when he tried to help his son and do waht was best for him during the war. He he street smart because there were many times he came close to getting in trouble like when the police caught him with a bag of sugar he wasn't supposed to have. He played it off well and said he owned a shop.

"What did you pick up?"

"Telephone wire, this it's very hard to find. Inside it's little wires. It's good for tying things."

"You always pick up trash! Can't you just buy wire?"

In the story Vladek is accused of keeping everthing, even useless stuff. I think he's afraid to throw away things because he's lived through a time when everything he owned, and loved was stolen from him. His objects, his family, and even his morals, and pride. He hangs onto his objects because he now lives in fear of having everything taken from him.
I also believe that he still is in survival mode, so he keeps things he thinks he could use later. He also associates objects with memories.

Scene 1:
He's kind and cares about the people around him. There are countless scenes where he has helped someone, either his family or friends or even strangers, in numerous ways. Like when he was trying to go to hungary to be free with his family instead of just leaving he asked his cousin if he wanted to stay where he was staying because it was a better place then where he is staying now.
(pg 153)

Scene 2:
Vladek is also very aware of the future and thinks ahead a lot. There is a scene where he is goes to his bank and plans to give his son Artie a key to his box there so that if anything should happen to him his son can get the valuable things that are in there instead of his current wife who plans to not give anything to anyone and keep all of Vladeks belonging to herself. (pg 126)

Scene 3:
Vladek is also very smart. There are many scenes where he gets caught by gastapos but still manages to get him and his family out. Like the time he was escapeing and tricked a polish man to thinking he was polish and got himself safely back to his wife and kids. (pg 64)

Scene 4:
He is very strict with money. He won't pay a professional to fix his roof. He also very rarely gives money to his current wife, Mala. Like when she wants to go to the hair salon he always complains about how she goes there too much. Even though in reality she bearly goes there. Even Artie said that when he was young, Vladek never gave him money for school supplies until he begged for about 3 weeks.

Vladek is a man that saves everything. Due to his experience in the concentration camps he has a habit of saving every little thing.

He is also a person who does not like to spend money very often. In one scene his son offers to buy him wire but instead he chooses to find wire laying on the street instead. This shows that he would rather collect and find things then to just pay for them.

Vladek is a very family orientated person. He tried really hard to keep his children and wife safe.

He is also a very resourceful man. He is always able to save things and use them later to sell and buy food.

Vladek at first seems to be nothing, but a money lover as he did not like lucia because her family was poor and didn't even have money for a dowery. While he likes Anja because her family is rich. This was demonstrated in the scenes where he says that Lucia's family is nice, but doesn't have any money. Also in another scene he says that the zylberbergs, Anjas family, were a very well off-millionaires

Vladek also show that he can be resourceful during the early WWII period. As he helps his family find the supplies to feed them. He is even able to make some money on the side with his blackmarket, under the table kind of deals. There is a scene where he gets some cloth from people with out using the coupons that they are supposed to use. Then Vladek uses these cloth to sell to other people.

Vladek also seems to have many connections throughout the book as these connections help his family survive such as how he had some friends in the jewish police and community that helped his family escape throughtout certain parts of the book. Such as the scene where he pays a person to sneak them out of a build that is holding them there until they are transfered to a concentration camp.

Vladek can also be seen as a hardworking person as he risks his life for his family as he goes to do his blackmarket dealings and such. This blackmarket dealings can get him killed. As there is a scene where some of the people were hanged for making their blackmarket dealings. In another scene he is caught by the german soliders with some sugar, but he was able to get away by pretending that it wa for his business.

Vladek, in Mala's words, cares more about money and materials than people and he thinks Mala is after his money. during the holocaust, the most heinous and sadistic event in the history of the world, Vladek had to survive by any means necessary, even if it meant paying the germans off to help them hide and escape the deathcamps. I think Vladek's love and deep attachment of money sprouts from the fact that he had to sell off his prized possessions during the holocaust and he probably hates that feeling of giving something away and never see it again. He more or less lived the saying that desperate men take desperate measures. However, I don't think that he was able to shake off his survival mentality.

As far as the scenes demonstrating an important aspect of Vladek's character, the whole graphic novel is more or less filled with those kinds of scenes.

There are many scenes where he is shown parting with his valuables as well as hiding in different places.

Valdik is a complicated figure as a person because he been through things in his life to make him the strong person that he is. Everything he lived back then is applied now in his present time. He became intelligent and well aware of things, well organized, and he is loving and caring.
Vladik is intelligent when he saw that the Germans had a proposal for the Jews and he took it. It was better to do the work they gave him then to live in a tent and possibly starve and freeze to death, he is doing everything possible to stay alive and healthy so he can one day go back to his family.
He is well organized that in the begging when he goes to Anja house he starts looking around and check if she is a well-organized girl. He mentions in his mind that he is also like that and he likes everything in it place.
Vladik is also a loving person when his wife is having problems he goes and helps her get better and feel better about her self. He is what you also call tough love.

The character Vladek is a guy who money is the most important thing to him. When he chose money over his wives proves that money is more important than anything

He is also smart. He knows how to manage his money in order for him and his family's survival.

He is also caring because when his wife was sick he left his work to be with her and take care of her.

He can also be controlling especially to his son, always giving him decisions even when his son is old enough to make decisions for himself

Vladek is a person who has an eye for money, like in the scence when he is introduced to Lucia he knows she doesn't have a lot of money and he picks Anja because of the money.
He is a very proud person too, in the scene when Artie is looking for his jacket he had thrown it away because he was ashamed that Artie was wearing such a bad jacket so he gave a new one.
He is also a very caring person, when they are at the P.O.W. camp he helped the old man with his work so the Germans wouldn't kill him.

1)vladek is very bitter towards his son, and seems to have a problem with showing him affection.for example in the very begining of the book when artie goes to his father and tells him about how his friends left him he suggests that they all get locked in a room together so that says something about his character.
2)vladek is very fond of money. when he is telling his story about the two women he was iterested in and how he chose the one with more money.
3)in this book vledek seems very handy. he made due with the things that were avlible to him to say alive. but this seems to be the case with many of the survivers.
4)vladek is very independent. this to may be a result of his past but he likes to do things on his own. very self-richous. like when he wanted to fix the roof himself but was not able to because of his age. and it hard for him to have his neighboor come over and do it

Vladek is a very formal person. He believes in good manners and listens to his parents. When Vladek is told to eat his vegetables and not to leave any leftovers, he listens to his parents and finishes it even though he does not want to eat anymore. This also shows that he still listens to his parents even when he is older so he does not forget what he learned throughout his life. It also shows his manner because it is impolite to leave leftovers at the table.

Vladek is strongly in tied with his money. It is shown when his water pip is broken and needs to be fixed. Vladek could easily call somebody to come fix it so he would not need to deal with it, but instead Vladek tries to fix it himself which is very hard because of his age.

Vladek is very organized. This is shown when Anja walks into his room and tells him that he is very organized. Not only does he say he loves being organized, Vladek also stated that he liked Anja’s closet because it was organized.

Vladek is very comforting and loving especially to his wife. This is shown because he keeps her close at all times and tries his best to keep her happy when she is in need of help. He also always tries to do the best for her like when she was crying he kept trying to help her out to make her feel better.

Ethan Switzer said...

Vladek has a unique knack for survival. this is demonstrated throughout the book.

First, when Vladek decides that working in the P.O.W. camp would be better than "rotting in those tents". this is a risky stance, but it shows his survivability, and his increased sense of dignity even as a prisoner.

Second, when Vladek uses his old debts in Sosnowiec to make money for his whole family. This also shows his resourcefulness given his bad situation.

Third, Vladek seems to have made all the right friends. This is also because of how much he cares about money. He stays with Anja's family because their rich and he ends up surviving longer because of the money he has.

Last, when Vladek is staying in Sosnowiec with Anja, he always provides because of the money he has. this is also why in the present he is so cheap, he wants to have plenty of money because he knows that it saved his life.

Vladek is man who accomplishes his goals for the better of his family and himself. He loves his wife a lot and he is always trying to please her as he tells his story to his son.
Vladek is a very honest person and doesnt want anybody to get hurt because of him hiding out where they are. He keeps where they are hiding to himself unless he knows the person and they need help.
Vladek is a very good hearted man also. In the scene when he helped the old man when he could work no more. He helped him work so he wouldnt get hurt.

1)Vladek is very caring towards his wife Anja. He always made sure that she was alright and always comforting her when things were getting bad.
2)Vladek is a very smart man. He would save his money up when most of his other family members were spending it and always knew who was trustworthy and who was not trustworthy.
3)Vladek is a man with OCD. We see this when he yells at his son because he made him mess up when counting his pills, he yells at him and tells him that hes going to start all over again.
4)Vladek is a very controlling man. For example, when he throws his son's coat because he does not feel that his coat is "good enough" and gives him another coat that he feels is better for his son.

Jaleel Kane-Abdullah. Vladek character loves to save money,he doesn't likes to spend any of it.For instance, when it comes to house repairments,he fixes the house because he doesn't hire a handyman. Vladek also is still in love with Anja,he talks about her all the time also he carries some of her old items, they were together for 70 years then she died.

Vladek even gets into arguments with his new wife,Mala, because fells that he treat her like nothing, they drive each other crazy. They argue about money,Anja, and etc.

During the Holocaust,Vladek was a helpful preson,he families stay in hiding places likes abandon buildings and house so they wouldn't be capture by Germans

Vladek is a smart and hardworking man. When the jewish people were being denied most of their rights, Vladek still managed to sneak his way around the system in order to provide for himself and his family. He did everything he could to make money, even if it meant risking his life.
He values personality over looks, when it comes to women. As was his choice with his first wife. He truly cared about her, and did everything to help her during the holocaust.
He sustained the morals he learned while suffering in the holocaust. This was shown when he made his son eat all of his food at the dinner table. when Vladek was poor and hungry, he ate every little morsel of food. Even in the present when he has an abundance of food, he still eats it all.
Vladek is comfortable with talking about the struggles and tragedies of his past life. It was a very hard time, yet he's put it behind him and doesnt let it affect his future. He remarried after his wife's suicide, and things are fine.

Vladek seems to be “in love” with money. That’s why he married Anja. In the book, with Anja’s father being very wealthy. When he had to choose from Lucia who is poor and Anja who is very wealthy, he chose Anja over Lucia because of her father being a millionaire.

Vladek is very loving to his family. When they moved to the ghetto, he tried to make sure that his family was with him, he gave up most of his jewelry that he took with him throughout the war for food or a place to stay for his whole family.

Vladek is a very organized man. When Anja first walked into his room Anja sees that everything inside of his room was organized. When Vladek goes into Anja’s closet he also enjoys the fact that her closet was very organized meaning she’s a very organized women.

Vladek is a very angry person. I think he is still angry because of the fact that he lost so much because of the war. That is probally why he does not get along with his wife.
he also seems like someone who doesnt like to waste money at all because of the fact that he had none during the war. And he likes to do things himself.
He also seems to still be in mourning over his wife and son

4. Vladek is a smart man who knows how to take care of himself. For example when he was in the camps with the other soldiers, he bather in the cold river to keep his body clean and he also found ways to survive the rough times during the holocaust.

Vladek is a very smart ,responsible and focused man who survived the Holocaust. Not only that he was also a Polish Jew, that worked as a salesman before being drafted into the Polish Army at the outbreak of World War II. Both he and his wife were imprisoned by the Germans during the Holocaust. They were liberated from the Nazi concentration camps in 1945.

1) Vladek's son Artie comes to visit his father every night to interview him about his previous lifestyle during the holocausts.Throughout the book, Artie confronts his complex and often conflicted relationship with his father.

2) He is also presented as stingy and a person who makes life very difficult for those around him, including his first wife Anja (Art's mother, who committed suicide) and his second wife Mala, both concentration camp survivors. The personality of the present day Vladek seems quite different from that of the man in the concentration camps, where he was resourceful and compassionate.

3)aving survived Auschwitz, Anja committed suicide in 1968. After her death, Vladek became immensely depressed and destroyed her diaries and other papers of hers — which annoyed Art as he tried to compile information on the Holocaust for Maus, calling Vladek a murderer. Spiegelman later married another Holocaust survivor named Mala. His son portrayed their relationship as difficult, characterised by arguments over money, with Mala eventually leaving him and then later returning.

4)Vladek and his son Art had a troubled relationship. Art disliked his father's racism and stingy, miserly mood towards money and items (he kept things he did not need; reused objects; only replaced essentials; did handiwork himself), as well as his treatment of his wives and his frequent need of Art's help later in his life.

The Jews represented the "maus" because they were living miserably
by the germans who represents the "cats" who chases them around. The Jews, as mice, can be seen as weak and helpless victims, as well as satirizing the Nazi portrayal of Jews as vermin. Also, this may symbolize the resourcefulness many Jews exhibited during the Holocaust and the inability of the Nazis to completely wipe out such a species.

Vladek is a guy who loves the business. In different scenes throughout the book he always finds a way to make business with people.

he also is a guy who changes his love for money. in the first scenes he tells us the difference between the 2 women in his younger life.Anja had money so liked her more that also told us he loved his money. but in the scenes of his later life he starts to complain how his wife always wants money and he dosent like that. he says that she is just with him for money. he also seems kind of cheap now.

He is a smart guy too. he finds a way to get through the germans when caught with pounds of sugar. he also finds a way for him and anja to get out of going to the concentration camps when they first got caught.

he is also caring and friendly man. when Anja's family and his father needed help he tried his hardest to keep them safe. he helped everyone he can and did as best as he can.

Vladek is a nice and caring person. When he was in the army he didn't like to shoot a lot, even though it would increase his chances of survival.

Vladek cares a lot about money and will go to great lengths to save a little. Instead of paying a handyman, Vladek would rather get Artie to help him work on the house, so he doesnt have to pay any money

Vladek is very smart, and numerous times uses his wit to try and survive. He builds a bunker to hide in above the chandalier, and in the basement under the box of coal. He also tricks the germans when they catch him with lots of sugar. He improvises, and gets away with it.

Vladek would go to great lengths to try and survive during the war. He bathes in the freezing river, prayes, and does gymnastics
