we can learn to not take things for granted and nothing is more important than the ones most closest to you... until they're gone which than you must look out for yourself. Also never be afraid of who you are. Be proud of your heritage, race, and religion.
i believe when injustice is committed, the personal responsibility is to aid those in need. the personal responsibility is to show every one else what is going on, to make your own society realize that they should help. the personal responsibility is to also try to for the others rights when they are being mistreated like in "The pianist" when the woman helped him get through the harsh times. and in "Hotel Rwanda" a man saved many others.
i think the collective responsibility is to find a solution to the problem and help on a much bigger scale to end the injustice. the collective responsibility is to protect those from injustice even if life sacrifice is needed. the collective responsibility is to quickly and powerfully affect the situation. like in "Maus" Vladek's jewish society protected him and made sure that he was always safe and comfortable. that shows that the group of people helped and turned the situation around alittle from bad to an average life.
When there are cases of injustice such as discrimination and racism people of the same kind usually group up. But there is always that small group of the "superior" party that stick around to help out. Collective responsibility depends on the group. When their lives are in danger people tend to panic and act without thinking. That's where the responsibility begins to fade. But there is always that one indivual who leads the group even under stress. Or the one who is still left standing in the end. They're the people who take their (including their family and or group's) survival into their own hands. These people do their best to make sure everyone survives even though they know that its impossible. The main character in the pianst survived because he was witty but mainly lucky. He did what he could to save his family but eventually moved on when he realized there was nothing he could do. In the end talent and determination saved his life. In Maus Vladek survived because he was a fighter. He tried to make others see that life was worth fighting for. He planned his every move when things started getting bad.His influence helped him out a lot on the way. In Hotel Rwanda Paul was the ultimate example of responsibility. He risked his life for thousands of strangers and neighbors. He risked his family's life as well. This man sheltered thousands of people in a hotel he was only supposed to be managing for a week or so. He made a way when all hope seemed lost. I must say his is the most determined out of all three characters. He saved hundreds from being brutally murdered. In the end Paul and his wife took at least a dozen orphans with them on their search for a new life. When people are put in a life or death situation they tend to act in miraculous and or desperate ways.
If you work together you can overcome anything if you really want to, and if you put your mind to it..
In Hotel Rwananda, he helped everyone, not only himself and in the end when you die you think of the things you have accomplished. He saved hundreds of peoples lives.
Anything can be overcame with the willpower to survive and temwork.one learns not to take life for granted, and/or what they have because it can easily be taken away.family will probably be the most important thing in life so you must cherish it.
Through each of these we learn how important family is. We need each other to survive. We also learn that money is not everything in Maus even though Vladek married Anja for the money. You should also be who you are and be proud of who you are. You also have to be able to work as a team and make sacrifices to be there for each other and help one another out.
when people are being killed for no other reason than the color of their skin, or their religion, or even a different tribe, it seems to me that we must look at these situations and ask ourselves "Why"? it is my belief when people see injustice, it is up to the people to demand that their government do something about it. It is true that racism and religious differences deter some from doing the obvious thing and help but it is up to the people to say something, because most of the time, if the situation is not in the interests of the government, nothing will be done at all. All of us have a responsibility to intervine if we see something that is wrong, whether we are 7 or 97.
Personal responsiblity consists of taking care of yourself and your family when injustices are being committed against a group of people. To take care of yourself, and then your family is the only way you can hope for survival.
When large groups of people are being victimized, it is the collective responsibility of the group to band together and make desicions as a group. An individual may rise as leader; one always does, but as a whole, the group must stay strong and undivided.
ive learned to look out for yourself, your family and also others. in the movie hotel rwa he not risked his life to help his family but his neibors too. he ran the hotel with the intensions of saving others
We learned that anthiing is possible and we can overcome any obsticles with the mindset to suceed and overcome what ever is needed to overcome. And we learn that life is very important and we should not take it for granted and always live for what is to come in the future.
we learn that anything can be overcome if you set your mind to it. Family is most important and you should cherish every minute of life with your family and friends. Also be proud of your heritage, culture, race.
from the pianist, we learn to hide and wait until the problem blows over. which is, pretty much, reality i guess. or in this case, its not really something you can rebell against, although some tried and failed. (ex. the building that was shooting at the troops that later got bombed and the people inside were forced out and shot all at once.)
hotel rwanda. the main guy, whose name i forgot, showed some honnor and nobility. (ex. when he sent his family away with the white dude in a sky blue uniform so they can be safe. while he stays at the hotel because if he were to abandon those people, they would be doomed. )
maus. iono about that book, i dont like it so i didnt finnish it. but from what i know, the vladek guy is pretty flexable. i never heard him say "i hate this" or see an attempt to escape. unless i have the plot completely wrong, it doesnt seem like he cares except for when he got drafted and sent his wife away to be safe.
if you ask me, personally, i didnt learn much except details about the holocaust. the pianist was an great movie, tho. 5/5 hotel rwanda had its moments but was a little borring to me. 3/5 maus sucks
I'm sure that we hear such atrocious atrocities happening but we now that us humans are only capable of so much. The average american is too busy trying to earn money and provide for himself or herself. I would gladly take a hand in to help a cause that ends death, poverty, corruption, and malnorishment, but is the the cause effective? Most Americans set up a cause to help such wars, but some are used to scam Americans into taking their money or worse, so its hard for People to try and contribute.
When there is injustice, I think that there should be someone taking initiative into creating justice. Only if there is a personal response then there can be a connected response. The blacks in the south took a peaceful stand after some individuals took personal responsiblilties. One man's effort can become a dozen's effort to enforce justice.
We have a personal responsibilities, and collectively as a group to stay true to ourselves and overcome things that get in the way. When injustice is being committed, it is that much more important to do so.
I believe that one of the only things that can be gained when injustice is committed would be not to take things for granted. Many people take many things especially family for granted but they dont understand that until it is taken away from them. They must be proud of what they have and never forget all the love and importance a person is recieving. In Hotel Rowanda, Paul never forgets his family even during the worst of times. Throughout the movie Paul continues on looking for his brother in law, sister in law, and neices. Paul even had a chance to leave with the police of the town so he would be safe, but he never took his family for granted and it paid off. Paul got to leave the city with his family, with his neices joining the family as well. Although they couldn't find his brother and sister in law, Paul and the familiy still tried to look for them.
From the movies we watched and the book we read, we learned that when an act of genocide, discrimination and or racism is occuring somewhere in the world, we have to help them no matter what, even if they cannot give us something in return. Like in the movie Hotel Rwanda, that is the reason why we did not help them out, because they had nothing to offer us so why waste our money, time and people to help them. We as human beings have to have the personal resposibility of overcoming that idea that in time, will catch up to us if we dont change it.
When we know that injustices are being committed against a group of people whether it be genocide or ethnic cleansing or some other type of mass persecution aimed at a specific category or group of people, it is our duty and responsibility to do something about it, even if the reward expected is far greater than what actually is received. Human life is too priceless to put a monetary or financial value on because, just like time, once it is gone, we can't get it back, no matter how hard we try. Even when injustices are not being committed against a specific group of people, we still should try to prevent injustices from being committed in the first place. Instead of racial disagreements and persecution, we should aim towards racial unity and peace.
We live in a society filled with oppression and injustice, where rich people become richer and more powerful and poor people get their homes foreclosed and end up living on the streets because they don't have money to pay the mortgage.
I once heard a preacher in church talk about how society is full of genocide and how society is really just a war against the poor and I thought about it for a second and thought to myself that the preacher was talking about his perspective on the state of society and everyone in the church agreed with him.
From watching Hotel Rwanda, The Pianist and reading Maus we learn that the personal responsibility is to help those in need. If there is any way to help those suffering around you, you should help them. In Hotel Rwanda the main character in the end used all the power he had to help the people around him who trusted and looked up to him. He put his life on the line to protect and save everyone. The personal responsibility in this story can also remind you of the personal responsibility of the main character in The Pianist. He did everything in his power to help his family survive. Although in the end he was the only one to survive, he did what he could until he could do no more. Until it was impossible for him to save his family he never gave up hope and did what he could. This is also like Maus in which Vladek also did everything he could to protect and save his family. He sold his personal items and asked favors though his many friends and connections. In the end he at least saved some of his family. Although we never actually found out everything because Maus ended so abruptly it was still a very good story. We learned from the three storys that the collective responsibility would be for everyone to do everything they can as a group to help in any way they can for the group of people that are under such oppression.
Jaleel Kane-Abdullah.All three of these stories have to deal with injustice in the community because of religion, tribes, and enthic groups. Its sad, being treated not as citizen but as an animal, facing cruelty and violence. Why should some people be treated like that, they all live in the same environment which they should get along and learn from one another, giving the benefit of the doubt.I know people have their own personal opinion about people and how they feel about them, that's fine but that doesn't give them the right to judge them and allow them to live or die. They're people just like you and me.
We can learn that even when people that are outside of the conflict know what is going on that they would just be like well thats just awful and go about their own business. We can also see that when these injustices are being committed the group of people that are involved in the injustices are ignored by everyone such as in Hotel Rwanda where the U.N. would not even help the refugees. This leads to how for personal responsibilities you should get involved in one way or another and help these groups of people from having these injustices brought upon them. As a collective responsibility we or you should help in providing a solution in helping stop the injustices and or to help avoid these kinds of injustices being committed in the future.
Life is not for granted. A person first reaction when there is danger is always to look out for theme self but there are other people that look out for one another. As a personal responsibility we should be looking out to help people when we see the need to help we should jus stay quiet. As a communities responsibility we should all just come to together and do something about it because a group of people is better heard out then just one person and a group can make a diffrence.
one thing i noticed about all of the instances of genocide and racial hatred is that the rest of the world seems to have no interest in helping.
in the holocaust(Maus, and the Pianist), Jews and everyone else who was not Aryan was either slaughtered like and animal or kept alive but treated like dirt. in Rwanda(Hotel Rwanda), there was a major genocide war between the Hutu and the Tutsi tribes. for example in the movie the UN came, but only to get the foreigners out of Africa ,though that is very important other countries should have helped. like the US could have helped. sure it would have took money but we are the richest country in the world and we really could have helped. we see stuff like that on the news and we sit and say that is so sad but don't do anything. everyone talks about world peace but our government isn't very willing to much to make it happen.i know there is probably more to helping people in different countries than just sending a plan over there and loading them all up. but it just seems like our country is very self centered. it makes me kind of ashamed. even today, its getting a little better cause our country and others were ready to go and help the people but the president is not willing to let the help come. so i guess thats why he might be tried for war crimes. but individually i just try not to complain about things i don't have cause there are many people in the world that have way less then me.
We can learn that in time of need and distress we must help and protect our family and the people in need. Basically, at all costs protect the ones you love and secondly help the people you can in need. All that matters is the safety of your family and if you cant save them either continue on your own and protect yourself or take your own life so you dont have to deal with the mourning of their deaths or not seeing them anymore.
we can learn that if we keep ourselves together and always decide as ONE, things can be a lot more easier and better for the people we love and the people that care about us. we should always keep our cultural background in pur heads
In the movies Hotel Rawanda, The Piansit, and the book Maus, we learned that you can survive the hardest obsticles you face. Its important to always see the bright side of things, because that will get you through the hardest times in life. In the movie Hotel Rawanda, Paul the main character saved hundreds of live by talking the in to his hotel and keeping them there. Even though more orphan kids and family came to Paul for help, he never said no. In the movie the U.N begain to help Paul with the hundreds of the Tutsi People get security and food, but as things got harder thaey soon to give up. I don't get how our country talks about freedom and helping others, but the U.S did nothing to help Rawanda during this horrifing time. They showed some images on the tv for America to see but they didn't do anthing to help these innocent people. There are times were you cannot just rely on the society but you can rely on family. in the two movies and the book, the most important way to survive was family. they helped each other and relyed on each other and thats the reward you get.
After having viewed The Pianist, read Maus, and watched Hotel Rwanda, reflect on the following questions:
What can we learn about personal and collective responsibility when injustices are being committed against a group of people?
After having to watch the Pianish and Hotel Rwanda and to read Maus, We can personally learn the history of racism, prejudice people from the past. Asides from that we can learn from the mistake the corrupt leaders had made by killing the other group of people and hating them thinking it will solve there problems emotionally or physically. In my opinion if you hate somebody learn to ignore them and life goes on. We can also learn to be proud of our own race, heritage and culture. We all learn how to love one another, or if not just have respect for people. c. asuncion
I feel that if you see someone being bullied or being taken advantage of you should help them. In the movies that we have watched and the book that we read they show how groups of people were bullied and no one did anything about it. There were so many times other countries could have intervined but they didn't. If a group of people see others being attacked or hurt they should help them and not just let them be mistreated. We have a responsibilty to help our community and keep our society safe. If we allow others to be oppressed then we are no better than the actual offenders.
kenya ramirez- I believe that when injustice happens, that we should help one another instead betray each other. that is a time when people need eachother the most. it is not right for anyone to betray or reject someone during that.Discrimination and Racism are horrible injustices and should never happen. In the movies that our class watched i learned that collective responsibility is to help in a bigger way.it is sort of when a community helps its people. personal responsibility is for protection of the ones you love, such as your family and wife/husband.
I belive that sometimes it's not about being a hero, and being the one everyone looks up to. Sometimes it's about just doing what's right. However, not just what you believe to be right because sometimes people's judgment of what is right and wrong is not the same as what others believe. And this is a major cause of many injustices. One thing we can learn about collective responsibility when injustices are being committed against a group of people is that we must not only look out for ourselves, and our own, but for others as well. Like in Hotel Rwanda when Paul never said no to saving anyone. He even choose to be seperated from his family so they could be safe will he stayed behind to keep others safe.
We can learn that everyone can make a difference, even if its small. Sometimes you have to look outside yourself and fight the injustice. Most people who aren't involved with these injustices, don't seek out ways to help. It helps if the benefit organizations publicize ways that people can help. People should be guilt tripped if it gets them to help. Sometimes, people and Countries cant fight there battles alone. What would make other countries care enough to help, before things get too bad. It like procrastinating on your homework. You know you'll have to do it sometime, and if you don't, it wont singlehandedly hurt you, but you know you should. Its similarly the same thing. Bigger countries should aid in preventing the injustices, but they dont have to. As they wait though, the problem gets bigger and harder to handle, but to everyone its better late than never
I think that when injustices are committed that people should try to hep in any way they can. I believe as an individual you can only do so much to help other, but as a society if everyone tries I think that they will be able to help. I do not think that we should do anything that might harm our families or ourselves, no matter how much you know you should. In my opion I think that we should do anything we can to help others unless your loved ones or your own life is in danger.
I learn that individuals like in the Pianist will try to stay alive. Families like in Maus will try to stay together, take care and protect each other from danger. It is usually better to be in a family than just by oneself. In a family, people can discuss and can often come up with a better resolution. Sometimes, even a whole group of people will try to stay together if they can, like in Hotel Rwanda.
I think we can learn that people are always more resilient than you think. Even in the worst, most dire circumstances there are people who survive and live through whatever is thrown at them. They also teach us how hatred can explode and consume people. The idea that genocide is something that has even been conceived and attempted, more than once, is appalling to us because we have not seen that it is a very real thing that all of us are ultimately capable of. After all we're only human.
i think we learned that if you stand up and be proud of who you are you can overcome anyting or anyone that's putting you down. And that you shouldn't take your family or friends for granted because you never know whats going to happen.
Our responsiblity as indiviual human beings, is to help those in need, no matter if you feel up to it or not. Unfortunetly some people help others when they feel like it.We need to help out people, no matter who they are, and no matter how bad theyve to you. We must neighbors, as we would like to be treated ourselves. God looks for people that do that kind of thing, and if you do, God is sure to be pleased.
I feel like if a group or society works together you can succeed. and if you put your mind to something you can always achieve something because you are motivated in what you believe in. Also people can learn from that to not just take things for granted

one thing i noticed about all of the instances of genocide and racial hatred is that the rest of the world seems to have no interest in helping.
in the holocaust(Maus, and the Pianist), Jews and everyone else who was not Aryan was either slaughtered like and animal or kept alive but treated like dirt. in Rwanda(Hotel Rwanda), there was a major genocide war between the Hutu and the Tutsi tribes. for example in the movie the UN came, but only to get the foreigners out of Africa ,though that is very important other countries should have helped. like the US could have helped. sure it would have took money but we are the richest country in the world and we really could have helped. we see stuff like that on the news and we sit and say that is so sad but don't do anything.
everyone talks about world peace but our government isn't very willing to much to make it happen.i know there is probably more to helping people in different countries than just sending a plan over there and loading them all up. but it just seems like our country is very self centered. it makes me kind of ashamed.
even today, its getting a little better cause our country and others were ready to go and help the people but the president is not willing to let the help come. so i guess thats why he might be tried for war crimes.
but individually i just try not to complain about things i don't have cause there are many people in the world that have way less then me.

In my opinion if you hate somebody
learn to ignore them and life goes on. We can also learn to be proud of our own race, heritage and culture. We all learn how to love one another, or if not just have respect for people.

I believe that when injustice happens, that we should help one another instead betray each other. that is a time when people need eachother the most. it is not right for anyone to betray or reject someone during that.Discrimination and Racism are horrible injustices and should never happen.

We can learn that we should do somthing about it when there are injustices being commited and that we can overcome any obstacle
i think we learned that if you stand up and be proud of who you are you can overcome anyting or anyone that's putting you down.
