Citations
One of the most important features of academic writing is the use of the words and ideas from written sources to support the writer's own points. There are esentially four ways to incorporate words and ideas from sources.
-Direct Quotation: Paul Thompson says, "The biggest surprise in recent teen-brain research is the finding that a massive loss of brain tissue occurs in the teen years."
-Paraphrase: In "Startling Finds on Teenage Brains," Paul Thompson notes that teenagers actually lose brain tissue which may explain their impulsive behavior.
-Summary: In "Startling Finds on Teenage Brains," Paul Thompson summarizes recent research on teen-brains that shows teenagers actually lose brain tissue which may explain their impulsive and violent behavior. Such changes in the brain don't mean that teens are not responsible for their violent behavior, but Thompson believes they should not be treated the same as adults in the criminal justice system.

America
America
Claude McKay
Although she feeds me bread of bitterness,
And sinks into my throat her tiger's tooth,
Stealing my breath of life, I will confess
I love this cultured hell that tests my youth!
Her vigor flows like tides into my blood,
Giving me strength erect against her hate.
Her bigness sweeps my being like a flood.
Yet as a rebel fronts a king in state,
I stand within her walls with not a shred
Of terror, malice, not a word of jeer.
Darkly I gaze into the days ahead,
And see her might and granite wonders there,
Beneath the touch of Time's unerring hand,
Like priceless treasures sinking in the sand.
What does this poem mean to you?
Respond to line 4, "I love this cultured hell that tests my youth!" Do you relate to this comment? How?
