Traveling Overseas to Win Votes at Home (NY Times)

Senators John McCain and Barack Obama are going to Colombia, France and Jordan. They are trying to gather more votes. The votes for these men and women are like an assurance that the president would aid them with upcoming problems. The main tactic these candidates use is their images with foreign leader. They also give international speeches which helps them too. although both of them still need to show more promises to gain better voters.

I think it is a very good idea to try and go to such countries and gather votings. First because it gives the candidates and us alittle more of an idea of how others think towards these mesn. It is also a good idea because it creates a strong future relation ship between the US and other countries.

Florida Prepares for 1st Execution Since Foul Up

This article is basically about how how Florida is going to re-instate execution by means of lethal injection. Florida officials say they have resolved problems with the December 2006 execution of Angel Diaz when needles were accidentally pushed through his veins, causing the lethal chemicals to go into his muscles instead, delaying his death for 34 minutes — twice as long as normal. Some experts said that would cause intense pain.

I don't believe in capitol punishment because I believe that no matter the crime, it is not our place as human beings to take away the life of another. Doing so, even with the justification that the condemned is guilty, is committing the same crime the prisoner did.

Tuesday is Cell hang up day for teens
oakland tribune

Starting Tuesday adults will be required to not talk on their cell phones unless they are using a handsfree headset. 16-17 year olds can't use their phones at all while driving, unless it is for an emergency. Traffic accidents are the leading cause of teen deaths and that is why they will have stricter rules. If a police thinks you are underage talikng on the hansfree set they can't ticket you because it would be profiling. It is expected that the amount of traffic deaths will be reduced by 300 after the law is in place each year.
I think this rule is good because to often people are on their phones and driving. It is dangerous because they are not paying attention to the road. They also hold up traffic because theyusually are driving slower and their in the fast lane. I think the rules should be for both adults and teens because I have seen adults that do stupider and drive worse than some teens while ontheir phones.

For the first time monday the price of oil barrels went up to $143, which is now double the price since last year. The main factors behind the rise today are the U.S. dollar remains fragile and geopolitical tensions, particularly surrounding Iran. Becaue of the rize in oil the national average for gas is up to $4.10.Because of the recent spike in gas many people have chosen many other forms of transportation.

Oakley official, 3 others die in plane crash ( S.F. Chronicle)

Four Oakley residents, one of them was a candidate for Contra Costa County supervisor died in a plane crash outside Las Vegas Saturday afternoon. Erik Nunn was the chairman of the Oakley Planning Commission and a candidate for District 5 supervisor. He and his wife had flown to Las Vegas on Thursday to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary with Michele and Craig Wilson. The Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor confirmed that the Nunn’s single engine Piper Cherokee plane crashed on Mount Charleston after striking power lines. The plane burned after crashing and all four passengers were killed. The burning plane sparked a wildfire in Nevada that burned 12 acres of dry brush and trees and threatened nearly 40 homes. The couples left behind total of 7 children who range in age from 4 to 9. Oakley City Council members plan to establish accounts at Bank of the West today for the seven orphaned children in the Nunn and Wilson families.

Response: I chose this article because I knew people who died in plane crash before. It was already hard as it is and I wasn’t really close to the person. I can’t imagine how hard it is for the kids whose parents died in the plane crash. But even so, these children would be taken really good care, because they are from families with background. And their parents were “important” people to the society. It’s good that the City Council will be doing something for the orphaned children, but I also hope the government or just even the insurance company would notice other “victims” with not so popular background next time.

White House Refused to Open Pollutants E-Mail

In 2007 the Supreme Court required that the E.P.A. to decide whether or not greenhouse gases are pollutants ant need to be controlled. when the decision was e-mailed to the White house for them to take action, the White House simply ignored the paper. Apparently putting pressure on the E.P.A., the White House managed to get them to soften up the paper, and rather than making a decision the new paper reviews benefits and strategy's for reducing greenhouse gases. Although the new paper offers logical arguments, the lack of a decision keeps the extensive action required from happening. I think this is ridiculous. The very idea that by just ignoring a problem, this administration thinks it can fix it, is distressing to say the least. The evidence that the floods in the mid-west, and the fires here present is obviously a voucher for the existence of this problem. We, as a country need to be more active and stop ignoring the problem.

Oakland Principle Recovering From Brutal Attack (KTVU.com)

Early Tuesday morning, an Oakland elementary school principle, Eyana Spencer, was going about bisiness as usual, when a man came up behind her and demanded her money. Without waiting for a response, the man began to savagely beat the woman with the butt of his gun. The principle ran back into her office and cried over the intercom; janitors followed the bloody trail into her office where she had locked herself inside. Police were stunned by the audacity and the ferocity of this attack, noting the woman's head trauma, fractured skull, and possible bite marks on her hand. Police have watched the surveillance tape and are now looking for suspects.

I think that this is absolutely ridiculous, this guy goes into a school to rob the principle. Aren't there better places to rob than a school? Not only that, but this guy nearly beat her to death, but he also bit her! Im sorry, but that guy should have his head examined.

Bush to sign $162billion war pending

President Bush is supposed to sign a $162 billion war spending plan that will pay for fighting in the middle east until the next president takes office. The spending bill will bring to more then $650 billion the amount has provided for iraq war since it started more then five years ago.

I think Bush needs to sign the spending plan because after that hes basicaly done letting the next president take office and hopefully be more sufficient with problems involving iraq.

Solution, or Mess? A Milk jug for a Green Earth

A change in design of milk jugs, performed by Wal-Mart and Costco seem to be able to allow milk to last longer and stay fresher. The new design also has the added advantage of being greener than the old jugs. It also provides for a more green way of transport as the crates used are now recyclable. Consumers are not happy about the change, as they keep spilling the milk they try to pour. However, they do like that the new jugs are easier to put in the refrigerator.

I think that this is a great new development in design for milk cartons. Clorox has already been redesigned and I’m glad to know that milk carton design is advancing.

16 shot in France at miltary Drill
NY times

The military was conducting a drill in Southern France when thay shot and wounded 16 people. No one was killed but 4 of them were seriously wounded. One of those 4 was a three year old child. They were supposed to use blanks but for some reason had actual bullets in the gun. They don't know why it happened but they are investigating to see if it was a "criminal act".
This is really terrible and a poor job by the military. How do you do a demonstration and have real bullets. They hurt 16 people including a three year old. That is a really bad job by them.

Oil prices pass $143 a barrel; US gas hits high (SF Chronicle)

Oil prices keep on going up because of supply concerns and fragile global economies. The European Central Bank may raise interest rates to strengthen the euro against the dollar. Iran, the fourth largest oil producer also threatened to disrupt the world's oil supply if the US attacked them.

The oil prices going up is definitely bad news for people who have low incomes but have to drive all the time. A lot of people are now driving vehicles that conserve as much oil as possible.

Florida Vandals Tag cars with Anti-Obama Messages

On Sunday in Florida, police investigated a hate crime of up to 60 cars spray-painted with hateful Obama messages. The damages were estimated of about $10,000. One car included the words, “Obama smokes crack”. The suspects also threw business cards of the Illinois Senator and rival John McCain which voices their support for Clinton.

No matter how strongly you feel about politics, you have no right to tag a random person's car with hateful messages. First of all, it's a hate crime, and second of all, there are plenty other ways to voice out your opinions. Causing $10,000 in damages and on top of that breaking the law does not get your point across.

Protesters disrupt Bulgarian gay pride parade (LA Times)

Sofia, Bulgaria, many extremists attacked the capital's first gay pride parade using rocks, bottles and gasoline bombs. there were about 150 people in the parade. The police protected them from getting hurt, no serious injuries were reported. about 60 people were detained for their wreckles act. All the gays recieved hostilities in Bulgaria and the respond to the parade was very fierce. in the far-right Bulgaria a union was made to openly resist the parade. the church also voiced its outrage to the government as the parade undermines the country's christian tradition.

I think it is very wreckles and quite bigited from the citizens of Bulgaria to attack the parade. Although it was a good thing that the government protected the parade. i also think it is wrong of the church to try and force the parade to stop just because of their own beliefs.

Slow Food Nation comes to San Francisco

Fifty thousand people are expected to attend the four-day exhibition in San Francisco over Labor Day weekend - what's being called the largest celebration of American food in history. Slow Food, a philosophy that food should be not only savored, but also produced with a social and environmental conscience, started as an Italian protest movement in 1986.

In a nation where half the population is starving and the other half is obese, we really do need to fix the food system or risk destroying our health and the planet. I think Slow Food Nation is a wonderfull idea and I'm planning on participating.

LOCAL: "sf chronicle" Discouraging Driving Crucial in Warming Battle:

A plan to carry out California's landmark law to fight global warming, made public Thursday by the state's air board, addresses a problem that planning groups say has been overlooked in most federal legislation: suburban sprawl. The draft plan, which seeks to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the state by 30 percent by 2020, encourages local governments to create land-use and transportation plans that help them meet reduction targets. The plan said improved land use and transportation planning could cut emissions by an additional 2 percent by 2020 and 4 percent by 2030, it said. An earlier report had put that reduction closer to 6 percent by 2020, said Stuart Cohen, executive director of the Transportation and Land Use Coalition in Oakland. "We think this number got way too low," he said. "It's going to let everyone off the hook."

It's funny how people are starting to act on this now even though this has been an issue for years, if not decades. I was surprised that these statistics surprised people to act even though they have been around in multiple sources. At least people are starting and making progress. Even though the plan will help out the emission levels in the next couple of decades it's still a very low number and proves that we should've started long ago when the topic of global warming was first introduced.

NATIONAL: "NY Times" U.S. Advised Iraqi Ministry on Oil Deals:

The disclosure, coming on the eve of the contracts’ announcement, is the first confirmation of direct involvement by the Bush administration in deals to open Iraq’s oil to commercial development and is likely to stoke criticism. In their role as advisers to the Iraqi Oil Ministry, American government lawyers and private-sector consultants provided template contracts and detailed suggestions on drafting the contracts. The advisers say that their involvement was only to help an understaffed Iraqi ministry with technical and legal details of the contracts and that they in no way helped choose which companies got the deals. in a country with some of the world’s largest untapped fields and potential for vast profits, are a rare prize to the industry. The contracts are expected to be awarded Monday to Exxon Mobil, Shell, BP, Total and Chevron, as well as to several smaller oil companies. The deals have been criticized by opponents of the Iraq war, who accuse the Bush administration of working behind the scenes to ensure Western access to Iraqi oil fields even as most other oil-exporting countries have been sharply limiting the roles of international oil companies in development. The administration has repeatedly denied steering the Iraqis toward decisions. “Iraq is a sovereign country, and it can make decisions based on how it feels that it wants to move forward in its development of its oil resources,” said Dana Perino, the White House spokeswoman.

Wow America is definatly full of themselves and pretty selfish. If they're going to negotiate with Iraq's Oil Ministry and make contracts with oil companies, why are we in war? Aren't we in war to get oil in the first place? Since the Iraq Oil Ministry has agreed to supply some of the United States's gas stations, i think we should pull out our soldiers. Oh wait that's right, the real reason we're in the Middle East/Iraq is to "occupy" terrorist organizations and keep them under control. Woops, my bad. Well at least the gas prices will decrease if not stay the same, right?

Giant Saudi field key to boosting oil output

Due to the rise in demand from the world market as well as pressure from the United States to increase output, Saudi Arabia is now increasing oil extraction in one of the last unused oil fields in it’s lands. About 100 miles west of the Saudi capital, the Khurais oil field is one of the last giant fields in the country. The Saudi government owned Aramco company is spending $10 billion to pump 1.2 million barrels per day by next June to increase the total amount released by the country to 12.5 million barrels a day by the end of 2009.

I think this is a good thing because it would be nice to not have to spend so much when I start driving. It will also hopefully bring down the price of food and other subsudies. Hopefully though, people will still be developing green technologies.

Calls in Louisiana to Require English at Commencement. (NY Times)

School officials in Terrebonne Parish, Houma, LA, are considering a policy that would require all commencement speaches to be made in English. This all started when a student recited a portion of her commencement in Vietnamese, she also gave a rough translation in english. Officials are concerned about the effect this may have, and they also want to propose a prayer during each commencement.
Critics say that this infringes on the student's civil rights, but the administration remains steadfast in their crusade.

Another ridiculous controversey appearing from an overreligeous southern settlement. The school board got uncomfortable when one student recited on sentance to her parents in Vietnamese. That is just completely idiotic if you ask me. And they want to put a prayer in it, which I dont really care about but they shouldnt do simply because it is forcing the religeous practices of the board onto the students. But keep in mind that this is a parish school in rural Louisiana.

Randolph literally still growing(Oakland Tribune)

The Golden State Warriors first round draft pick was Anthony Randolph coming out of college basketball at LSU. He is 6'10 and he is most likely to play center. but the doctor says that he is still growing. the doctor says he has 2 more inches to grow if not more. Which means he is going to be 7 foot 1.

He is going to be very tall and i think that he is a pretty good asset to the Golden state Warrior's assocition. He is pretty good but no one has seen him in the NBA yet which is most likely different and harder than college. To get a starting position he will have to beat out Al Harrington and or Andries Bieadres. Well see how good and what will happen with this young growing basketball player when the NBA starts back up.

This article is actually way less decisive and important then it seems from the title. They explain a lopsided report on a new theory. This article disappointed me because new things aren't often found and even less often confirmed in space.

Gay revelers celebrate pride, marriage rights/ The Oakland Tribune

The article was basically talking about how gay couples feel about finally being able to marry. Gay marriage was made legal on June 16, 2008. It briefly discusses the 38th annual gay pride Mayor Gavin Newsom received ovations along the parade route for his role in working to overturn the state's gay marriage ban. Gay couples donate money to a nonprofit group working to fight a ballot measure that would once again ban gay marriage in the state.

Response: I agree with the gov. Arnold Schwarzengger when he said " I personally believe that marriage should be between a man and woman". That's the way marriage is supposed to be. What kind of examples do gay couples set for their children? How does a boy grow up to be a man when he has two mothers? Or a girl to a woman when she has two fathers?

Mosquitoes bite the people who are easiest to find. When exercising, your body temperature and the amount of carbon dioxide in your breath will increase and certain skin chemicals like lactic acid will be produced. Those all help mosquitoes find their meal.

Missing girl’s stepfather arrested
Posted: 09:27 PM ET
(CNN) — The investigation into a Vermont girl’s disappearance has now led to charges against her stepfather in connection with the sexual assault of another child, authorities announced Tuesday.

The arrest of Ray Gagnon is “a byproduct” of the search for 12-year-old Brooke Bennett, said Col. James Baker, director of Vermont State Police. Baker would not provide details of the charges, but state police said they stem from an assault on another child in the summer of 2007.

In addition, federal agents are preparing to charge Gagnon, 40, of San Antonio, Texas, with obstruction of justice over the destruction of evidence “related to this investigation,” FBI Special Agent John Pikus said. Gagnon “has family members in his area and he has been in Vermont on a regular basis,” Baker said.

Gagnon is Bennett’s stepfather, said Sgt. Tara Thomas, a Vermont state police spokeswoman. He is scheduled for arraignment Wednesday in a federal court in Burlington."

Response: I find this very interesting although the director of Vermont State Police did not give a lot of details of the charges. But What I also like to know how were the step father of the victim was connected to her kidnapping? I cannot wait to hear the new details in the future.

(SF chronicle)

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom goes into the race for the California governor today on July 1, 2008. This race is to see who will be the 2010 governor of our state of California. Mayor Newsom takes first steps towards his goal of being governor by starting his campaign committee. Mayor Newsom will be running against Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. He has started his committee now so he can gain some contributions to help him in the 2010 governor elections.

I believe that he does not need to start a campaign committee this far in advance. This is also a good idea as he is trying to getting a good head start. I think it might be a nice race in 2010 as governor Schwarzenegger should also think about starting his campaign soon. It doesn't always hurt to start early.

Deepening Cycle of Job Loss Seen Lasting Into ’09 (New York Times)

Automotive sales have also plummeted as this will lead to layoffs. People are saying these job losses my last until '09 and maybe even further.

I believe that it is true that the rate of job losses are going to continue well into '09. As some companies are even laying off employees that have been working at the company for years and can work at the company for more years in the future. I also think that as economy is in decline at the present that many more people will go into poverty.

Mayor Newsom wants to move on up to the governor's place
Campaign expected to be very crowded and very expensive

Mayor Gavin Newsom has announced that he plans to run for governor in 2010. He has started to collect donations for his campaign, since the race could cost each candidate an upward of $30 million. Newsom feels he stands apart from other candidates because of his support for gay rights, universal health care, and for strong environmental programs.
I think Newsom makes a great candidate because he's already shown that he can work hard and achieve results, as seen with the battle for same-sex marriage. The fact that he's started to fundraise two years before the elections shows some good signs. I think his biggest challenge will be winning over the many californians that dont care for his accomplishments as a mayor.

5 Killed in Riots After Mongolia Vote

The president of Mongolia, Nambariin Enkhbayar declared a national state of emergency after a riot broke out. The riot involved angry protesters who were upset about the election results. The protesters clash with police left five people dead in this riot. 710 people were detained after the riot. The headquarters building of the ruling Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party burned down during the riot.
I think its sad that violence had to break out, but i don't think it would have happened if the government wasn't fooling its people. Although i don't support violence, i hope that the Mongolian government learns a lesson from this. Even though most governments aren't truthful with their countries people, it tends to make for fewer problems if they are. Or at least they shouldn't cheat their country.

Former Vice President Al Gore, seeking to shake up an energy debate that is focused mostly on drilling, challenged the United States to shift its entire electricity sector to carbon-free wind, solar and geothermal power within 10 years, and use that power to fuel a new fleet of electric vehicles.

The goal is the most ambitious energy plan by a major U.S. political figure - and one many energy experts say is unrealistic. Gore insists the only real obstacle is the reluctance of America's leaders to seek bold solutions to high energy prices and global warming. He likened his challenge to President John F. Kennedy's 1961 call to put a man on the moon.

"This goal is achievable, affordable and transformative," Gore told more than 1,000 cheering supporters at the Daughters of the American Revolution Constitution Hall in Washington. "It represents a challenge to all Americans in every walk of life: to our political leaders, entrepreneurs, innovators, engineers and to every citizen."

Response: I think that Al Gore is trying to help the U.S. get rid of its addiction on fossil fuels and use alternative energy, such as solar power and wind power.
